Technology for the Private Investigator – Then and Now

As a Private Investigator in this ever changing world of technology, the way we operate daily has completely changed. Our basic tools of phones, computers, cameras, surveillance tools, etc. are now smaller and faster. It is absolutely amazing what they can do!

A cell phone (then known as a bag phone) just a few years ago was the size of a small suitcase. The next model of a cell phone (flip phone) was still so large that we jokingly refer to those as the Flintstone phones. The only computer was a desktop model, and it was huge and noisy. Cameras were large and bulky, there was no such thing as a GPS device, small cameras, etc.

Here is one funny story that happened just a few years ago when video cameras and other cameras were so large and bulky. We were stopped on the side of the road filming a subject for a workers compensation investigation case that we were working on. The way we had to sit with our camera pointed out of the car window must have looked suspicious because before we knew it we were surrounded by police. They thought that our camera was a machine gun and that we were pointing it at someone! Of course that was easily explained and we have joked about that story for years.

Now, thanks to technology, we have the world at our fingertips! We have mobile offices complete with cell phones, iPads, laptops, small cameras and video with the ability to take amazing pictures, Location Monitoring Technology (GPS), cameras/recorders disguised in pens, etc. All of this enables the Private Investigator to work smarter for our clients.
